Hi and welcome to Vintage Airguns. If you are having trouble joining our new forum please email slowdown@gmail.com
Giffard rear sight needed.
  • I am in need of an adjustable rear sight for a Giffard rifle, or the adjustable, rear target sight for a Jean Marck Heavy Gem No. 3 which will fit at a pinch.

Any help in obtaining either of these sights would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, Eric

  • Some of the French target rifles and pistols had more or less the same style, in all probability they were all coming out of St Ettiene Gun company and installed on various rifles and guns not just Giffards.

I was going to attempt to make one of these until I took one apart to see just how they are made!
You have the base, a spring clip which locks the sight in place, the main base blade holder, the pivot bar for it, the spring, the moving blade, the moving blade lateral screw, the moving blade lateral screw locking nut, the vertical hight fine adjustment screw, the butterfly main blade hight elevation locking screw, the spring steel locking plate. After all that Im sure I have forgotten something.
12 parts to it! that I can remember.
Needless to say as yet I have yet to attempt it.

  • Thanks to Dave Lawrence of the Gem Forum, I now have a rear target sight from a Jean Marck heavy Gem which is almost identical to the Giffard rear target sight with the exception of the vertical height fine adjustment screw - it doesn't have one.

None the less, it is going to be much easier to drill and tap the moving blade and insert an adjustment screw than it would to fabricate the whole sight.

Thanks again to DCLDave who kindly donated the sight FOC!!

  • Excellant news, I didn't realise that Gem had that sort of rear sight fitted, all the onces I have ever seen were fairly ordinary upright blade.
  • Here is a pic of the JM gem sight and the Giffard target sight for comparison:

  • Nope never seen one on a Gem!
Considering the Gem isn't rifled and not what I would call a Target rifle, Im rather surprised it has that has that sort of sight mounted on it.
I would have thought it has more parts to it than the rest of the rifle ;-)
